Leading for Creativity: How To Value, Nurture, and Encourage
Creativity by Leaders, Teachers, and Students
By Dr. Doug Reeves

27th - 28th February 2016, Luxembourg

Day 1
Part 1 - Leading for Creativity
With new research evidence, Douglas Reeves provides a compelling case for what leaders must do – and what they must avoid – to nurture creativity among students and teachers. "Nearly everyone claims to value creativity as an essential 21st Century skill," Reeves contends. "But policies and practices in curriculum, assessment, and the evaluation of teachers and administrators often systematically undermine these intentions." This practical keynote address includes a multi-disciplinary approach to the subject of creativity, including the latest research and ideas from neuroscience, education, psychology, and philosophy. The latest book by Dr. Reeves s Inspiring Creativity and Innovation in K-12 Education, published in 2015.
Part 2 - Assessing Creativity
The key to improving creativity in the classroom is improving how we assess creativity. One of the great myths about creativity is that it is a quality immune from objective assessment. In fact, creativity can be assessed. Indeed, assessment is an essential element of any educational environment that seeks to foster creativity. The challenge is that most assessment of creativity is deeply flawed. These assessments are not only inconsistent with the best research on the subject, but actually stifle the risk, error, and failures that are essential to creative endeavor. This interactive presentation provides practical guidelines about the best (and worst) practices in assessment and offers participants the opportunity to make personal application of these principles to their specific professional responsibilities.
Day 2
Part 1 - How to Regain Your Focus and Defeat the Law of Initiative Fatigue
What could possible be wrong with "best practices" – the foundation of many reform programs? Viewed in isolation, each best practice is a sparkling diamond, standing alone casting its brilliance on everyone who sees it. But educational institutions are rarely content to polish a diamond, nurturing the impact of a particularly effective practice for students and schools. Soon after the first diamond is in place, another best practice is added to the mix. Then another, and another, and another, until the diamond is invisible, buried by a nondescript pile of rocks. The stunning evidence is that a best practice can rapidly become an ineffective practice, not because the practice itself was bad, but because any professional practice depends upon the context of support, monitoring, and improvement.
Part 2 - What's Changed About Change Leadership
Dr. Reeves challenges some of the prevailing theories of change leadership, including the following:
  • The Time Frame for Systemic Change is 5-7 years.
  • Stakeholder buy-in is essential.
  • Vision precedes specifics.
  • Implementation dips are inevitable.
  • Long-term strategic plans are necessary.
With compelling evidence and a deep sense of urgency, this presentation offers new alternatives for leaders facing change at the classroom, school, and system levels.
